Ladakh is located at high altitudes. The oxygen levels are low and it is a vast, howling cold desert. The place is surreal with lofty mountains, fresh water and sand dunes. The entire landscape has a brownish- white hue to it.

Home to Buddhism, it is a very tranquil and an adventurous place to be in! It also has a lot of things to offer from its authentic cuisines to the basic Indian food.

Let’s stroll!

A Special Token of thanks to the Indian Army for making the journey of the tourists even more safer and secure.

Street Food in Ladakh

Gyuma is a tibetan style sausage which is filled with blood, rice and meat.

Kanti is cooked with sheep’s intestines and stomach. They also mix some other organs and serve in a newspaper in the form of a thick curry.

Tuji are small pieces of the brain pierced through a skewer. If you love barbecued food, then this is for you! It has a smoky taste.

Walking in the street, there are lots of other things to try like biryani, boiled eggs etc.

Places To Try in The Area

Meetha Samosa at Choice Point- Samosa is a deep fried triangular patty mostly having the filling of veggies. But here, there’s a twist.

Cottage cheese is coated with sugar and fried, then, some coconut powder is dusted over it. It is really very sweet.

Army Cafe- We tried momos at this cafe and they were simply amazing! Very steamy, fresh and spicy. Hits differently!

Parathas (flat bread) here feel homemade. It is hot to touch and is stuffed with chopped chillies and mashed potatoes. The surface of the butter shines with a chunk of butter melted over it. Just how Punjabis would like their parathas to be!

You could also try their vada bun. A small gooey, breakable ball of mashed potatoes is kept between the two slices of bun. It is a fulfilling breakfast with a ‘chai ki pyaali’ (a cup of tea).

Everything cost us just INR 100. The services that the Indian Army gives at an altitude like this, that too, at extremely affordable rates is commendable.

Fun Fact- It is at a height of 11,000 feet!

Rajma at Raju Dhaba- Rajma Sabji (curry) with fresh and crisp Tandoori roti is a must try! A plate with good warm food is always appreciated in a cold weather.

* It is in the Khaltse or Khalsi area of Ladakh.

Langar at Gurudwara Pathar Sahib- Langar is the meal served at a community kitchen open to all irrespective of the caste, creed, colour, religion etc. It belongs to the Sikh religion but as told earlier, it doesn’t discriminate against the visitors. Anyone wanting food can come here.

Their staple meal is Dal, Roti and rice. Because it is so pure and pious, it legitimately tastes the best.

You’ll have to wash your own utensils, sit on a carpet and will have to receive rotis with open hands. These gestures instill that a man must be humble no matter what!

There’s also cinnamon, cardamom tea to slurp on! It is served with a bowl of namkeen.

Thukpa and Shapale at Tibet Kitchen- Both are authentic tibetan foods. Thukpa is a broth which has lots of veggies and noodles in it. Shapale is a minced mutton pie which is first grilled and then deep fried. It is served with a spicy orange chutney.

The experience of having it is amazing. It is an extended “Mmmmm”!

Mutton Momos at K.K. Bites- It is a small hut-like shop. To impart some warmth to your body, you should try the minced meat momos with spicy chutney and a mildly spiced bowl of soup. The momos are very juicy and go very well with the chutney.

Momo is a dumpling which has various kinds of filling in it.

Dal Chicken Curry and Roti at Dogra Dhaba- At a very reasonable price their Dal and Chicken Curry is good to have while travelling in the mountains.

It is not at all spicy and just like a lot of other things in Ladakh, gives the feeling of home.

** Leh is a region in Ladakh which is famous that is why it is known as Leh, Ladakh. These are not two different places.
