Welcome to Haridwar, a popular pilgrimage destination in Uttarakhand where devotees throng to seek divine blessings by taking a dip in the holy Ganges. This sacred city has some great street food that keeps the masses active and going. We were there to explore the street food scene in these busy lanes. So let's tell you about some popular eateries over here.
SURJA KI DAL
Jwalapur Chowk Bazaar
Surja Ji appears every morning to serve his nutritious lentil snack to the locals who are enamoured of its taste. It is essentially boiled moong dal mixed with home made spices. Eating it out of a leaf plate added to the taste.
GITARAM HALWAI
Jwalapur
It is an old sweet shop that specializes in traditional sweets like milk cake, lauki ka lauj, khoya burfi, rabri etc. We were impressed by the quality and taste of some of their popular fare.
BHAGWATI CHOLE BHANDAR
Har Ki Pauri
They serve a unique thing called adda which is a bun soaked in chole ki sabzi. It is topped with chutney, ginger julienne, and fresh coriander. Wash it down with some channe ka pani which is a spicy yet hearty broth made from the leftover water from the boiled chickpeas.
RAWAT PAAN BHANDAR
Har Ki Pauri
Just cross over to the opposite side of Bhagwati Chole Bhandar and come to this old betel shop if you wish to enjoy a paan.
THAKUR RAGHUVIR SINGH JI KACHORI WALE
Moti Bazaar
They serve all kinds of traditional savoury and sweet snacks dishes like puri sabzi, lassi, kachori, sweets etc. but their kachori sabzi tops the sale. Served in a leaf bowl, it is an awesome treat. But their kheer mohan was too sweet for us.
SHIV SODA
Moti Bazaar Road
You definitely need to come here and have a lemon soda during your fully fledged gastronomic tour of this holy city. The refreshing beverage will infuse a boost of energy and enthusiasm.
MATHURA WALE KI PRACHIN DUKAN
Moti Bazaar Road
Their desi ghee puri sabzi platter is the best in the city. It consists of urad dal puri and some pumpkin and potato sabzi. Every morsel is simply gratifying. We also loved their tiny potli samosas and chandrakala. Here too everything is served in leaf pates.
JAIN CHAAT BHANDAR
Chaat Wali Gali
The owner Jain Ji is loved not only for his lip smacking treats but also for his genial personality. People are crazy about his kanji vada, magic chaat and dahi patashe and so are we. The best part of the eating experience here was the malu leaf bowls in which these dishes were served.
PRAKASH LOK
Moti Bazaar Road
Stop here for some badame milk and lassi. The former is a luscious drink made of almond.
MATHURA WALE
If sweets are your calling then this place is a sweet paradise. Their malai samosa, rabri and chocolate burfi are labour of love.
GURU VAISHNAV BHOJANALAY
Gali Lala Ram Prasad
For an affordable traditional meal we went to Guru Vaisnav bhojnalaya. The thali consists of roti, rice, dal, seasonal vegetable preparation, papad and raita. We enjoyed every morsel of this home styled desi ghee meal that was prepared over a wood fire stove.
PANDIT SEVARAM SHARMA DOODHWALE
Ram Ghat
After filling our stomach with all the goodness of the wholesome meal, we grabbed a glass of hot milk and called it a day. Drinking milk before night sleep is considered beneficial and hence it is a part of the food tradition over here.
